Agora Artists: Summer Series w/ Cami

Dancehall and Carnival! w/ Cami
This class will focus SOCA, a music style from Trinidad and Tobago that is essential to popular culture in the Caribbean island. One of the biggest shows of SOCA music and dance can also be seen at Carnival during the month of February right before Ash Wednesday. It will also explore other movements in the Dancehall and African aesthetic.

Bio:
Dallas Native, Cami is a Master's Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance Candidate. She's a wife and mother of twin toddlers as well as an active dancer/choreographer in the DFW Metroplex.
She's a Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts alumna. Cami then went on to receive her Bachelors in Dance Education for grades K-12 from Texas Woman's University and is now in the MFA Dance program there. She has coordinated dance programs for DallasISD and arts programs for Big Thought. Cami was a founding member of Terrance M. Johnson Dance Project as an Educational Outreach Director, dance performer, and choreographer. She has performed in a number of states across the U.S. from New York to Texas to Florida. Cami also traveled internationally to Nice, France performing with Art Saves Lives out of Houston, Texas.
About Summer Series:
Summer Series is a series of weekly outdoor dance offerings at Sweet Pass Sculpture Park. Each week, a new local movement artist will share a practice of their choosing. Together we'll find space to play, heal, express, sweat, and restore. Classes are offered on a sliding scale, $5-$20. Be advised that we will be moving outside, sometimes in direct sunlight! We recommend wearing shoes you can move in and bringing sunscreen and bug spray. Special thanks to the Material Girls for allowing us to move through their installation, Desire Paths, and to Sweet Pass Sculpture Park for generously opening their gates to us <3

Grounded movement focusing on the contraction and release of the center of the body, and the body's reaction to such movements. Expressive choreography and movement executed with an emphasis on technique. Warm-up, across the floor and combinations/ choreography are included.

Sarah Matzke is a Choreographer, Performing and Dance Educator originally from Youngstown, Ohio. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Advertising, Dance and Religious Studies from Southern Methodist University and is a Masters of Fine Arts in Choreography at Jacksonville University candidate. Sarah is a company member of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance and Open Sky Arts Collective, in addition to teaching at AD School of Dance, The School of Contemporary Ballet Dallas and Booker T. Washington School of the Visual and Performing Arts. Sarah is the recipient of Bates University Teaching Fellowship and has been a Guest Artist at the Collin Country Ballet Theatre, Eastfield College and the University of Texas at Dallas. Her piece represented the University of Texas at Dallas at the 2016 American College Dance Festival. She and her husband are co-founders of Aaron + Hur, a non-profit organization that focuses on the spread of the performing arts and the support of leaders around the globe. Through this outlet, she continues to empower artists in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

After 10 years based in NYC, The DASH has recently expanded into the Dallas area. These teaching artists are here as members of The DASH and will be performing in a brand new creation "The Power of Collision" alongside the rest of The Ensemble in our Texas debut July 24 at Dance Industry Performing Arts Center at 2pm and 4pm.

DASH Company Bio:
The DASH Ensemble, guided and founded by New York native Gregory Dolbashian, has been an independently operated entity since its founding in 2010 debuting with a winter season at JOYCE SoHo. The company has performed all over New York City including major venues such as The JOYCE, NYLA, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Guggenheim Works and Process, Central Park SummerStage, Kaatsbaan, NYU’s Jack Crystal Theater, Joe’s Pub, Symphony Space, Riverside Church Theater and The Skirball Center. The DASH also has engaged in a number of self-produced projects and concerts including shows at The DiMenna Center, Gina Gibney’s Agnes Varis Lab for Performance, The Playground’s AfterDark Series, The CRAWL series and also a film project, “DAYWALKING” with acclaimed fashion film director Charlie Wan. The company has also toured the U.S and been presented by The McCallum Theater in Palm Desert, CA, at UNC Wilmington at Thalian Hall, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, and also by American Dance Festival in Durham, N.C
